As you will have read elsewhere on the website we have lost our President Vic Ashford after a period of illness. Vic who was like a father to the club never lost his enthusiasm for Trials and Scrambles and was always in the thick of things either organising permits and entry forms or out running the Moor to Sea from entries, to course setting, to results. His knowledge of the area and his interface with farmers is almost irreplaceable. There must be hardly anyone in the Centre who did not know Vic and his dedication to the sport. On a personal note he persuaded me with my wife to come and support his other passion -Whist Drives, the proceeds of which were passed to different charities and he would regularly go to Bournemouth playing whist for a week at a time. It was his equivalent of the SSDT- Non stop whist for a week- and he was a good player. He will be missed greatly by all in the club and by his many friends in Motorcycling, Whist club and by many Market Traders. Our condolences go to all of his family and loved ones.
We have to carry on however and our next event is the Gordon Brewer Trial which includes a route for Clubmen and Experts as well as an easier route is being run on TUESDAY 5th June- Why on a Tuesday?- well it is a Bank Holiday for the Queens Diamond Jubilee so we intend to celebrate! by enjoying ourselves. Start will be at Hound Tor. Regulations in the Gazette.
Our next easy Trials series is on Saturday 30th June at Shaptor Rock Farm at 2pm- This will include a Hog Roast courtesy of Neil Langworthy. Regulations should be in the June Gazette.
The first round of this series on Good Friday had about 130 entries; it was a good trial and was enjoyed by all. A huge thank you to all the observers who turned out for us on the day.
The C&D trial at Bottor Rock Farm was also enjoyed by all and many parents came and thanked the club for the event. Again many thanks for all those who helped from observing to results and organisation.
The British Solo Trials championship is on the 14th and 15th of July at Ruby Rocks as the terrain will be easier than Kelly Farm and will be a slightly modified version of the Southern Experts we ran recently.
A date for the diary of Enduro riders. Our Enduro meeting has been changed from the 16th to the 23rd September. That is the week after our joint running of the Dartmoor Two Day Classic on the 8th and 9th September with the South West Classic Trials Association. Entries have already reached one hundred with 5 months to go.
As we pen these notes all three of our club riders are still going strong in the SSDT with Peter Rew leading Rabbit and Dad Anthony going into Thursday.
Happy riding
Mike Naish
